The Berndt Museum of Anthropology
And the origins of its collection
Presented by John Stanton

UWA’s Berndt Museum was established in 1976 to house the collections held in the Department of Anthropology, and John Stanton became Curator, subsequently Director, from 1978 until 2013. The Museum holds one of Australia’s finest ethnographic art collections, spanning Aboriginal Australia, Papua New Guinea and Asia, extensive collections of photographs, sound and video recordings, and important archival holdings. The diversity of the collections and high level of documentation make the Museum an invaluable facility for research and teaching, and for the wider community, particularly Aboriginal communities.
