Convict Schoolteachers - Irma Walter & Heather Wade

When: 10:00am - 20/08/2021

Location: 49 Broadway, Nedlands

Speakers Irma Walter and Heather Wade are former teachers and share a common interest in local
history. As members of the Harvey History Online Group they have been researching and publishing the
histories of convicts who were transported to Western Australia from 1850 to 1868. One project has been
to record the stories of six convicts employed as teachers in the Australind area, a measure implemented
by local settlers as a way of overcoming the severe shortage of teachers for their children. This paper
discusses settlers’ reasons for employing these men, their qualifications to take on the role of teachers,
and the conditions under which they worked, community attitudes to their employment and the hardships
they faced. It gives an account of several of them, including Stephen Montague Stout, who went from
teaching to become one of our early photographers and then editor of several newspapers.
