Rockingham District Historical Society Inc.

The Rockingham District Historical Society Inc. was formed in 1969 as a Branch of the Royal West Australian Historical Society. In 1974 the society opened a museum at the Rockingham foreshore which moved to its current site, the old Rockingham Road Boards on the corner Flinders Lane and Kent Street, in 1979. The beautiful Art Deco Museum building (pictured above) was extended in 1988, joining it to the Shire’s library which has now been added to our museum.

Under the management of a committee of the Rockingham District Historical Society, we operate a totally volunteer-run museum. Volunteers are appointed to positions of Curator, Library, Editor etc. The museum has both permanent and display that are regularly changed, a local history library covering West Australian’s pioneer and military history, large map collection, microfilm and hard copies of local newspapers, Council records and rate books and local cemetery records. The library can be used by the public for research, and our members can borrow books.

The Society holds 12 committee meetings a year, and 9 General meetings [March to November] with speakers. The AGM is held in February. AGM and General Meetings held on last Saturday of month at 2pm. These meetings are open to the public.

The Rockingham Museum is open from 1pm to 4pm, five (5) days per week Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Group bookings or out of hours visit can be made by phoning 95923455.

The society produces a quarterly newsletter, The Historian. We have reprinted Rockingham Looks Back by Nora Taggart and Sea and Forest by Vic Fall and both are for sale at the Rockingham Museum along with A Guide to Flora and Fauna of Rockingham’s Offshore Islands and Cape Peron, and Rockingham Port to City. We have a number of brochures telling the stories of our area including the Escape of the Fenians from our shore
