Ravensthorpe Historical Society Inc.

When the Ravensthorpe Historical Society Inc. was founded in the 1970’s it met in the ground floor rooms of the old Commercial Hotel. Later that decade it was able to restore and turn the old Dance Cottage (pictured left above with the museum to the right) in Morgan street – built in 1900 – into a Museum and headquarters for the Society. The Museum now houses extensive displays of photographs, archival documents from 1841, a rare shoe collection, hospital equipment, gold, copper, nickel and lithium mining memorabilia, and household objects. The museum, with farm equipment and railway carriages, is open Monday to Saturday 10am – 4pm, admission: Donation.

The Society meets on the first Saturday of the month at 9.30 am and about 12 members attend. Our members help maintain the museum and attached visitor Centre and craft shop, and we have an active web site and Facebook presence.  Our shop stocks a number local history books, some of which the Society has published.

In 2012 the Society took out the Royal WA Historical Society’s Merit Award, and in 2016 won the WA State Heritage Community Group Award and the Ravensthorpe Community Group Citizen Award.

Significant places of interest in the area include the Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun old and current cemeteries, the Hopetoun-Ravensthorpe railway heritage walks, the No 1 Rabbit Proof Fence, Kukenarup Memorial, Phillips River Canoe Trail, Silo Art, the 2-week Spring Festival and Wildflower Show in September and exhibits of Farm Gate Art (sculptures from farm scrap) and the Fitzgerald River National Park.
