From small beginnings in 1926, the Society’s Museum collection has grown to comprise thousands of items that tell stories of life in Western Australia and help to preserve and present our heritage.

The collection includes artworks, costume and accessories, textiles, domestic and work items, dolls and other toys, furniture, and a variety of ephemera that provide an insight into the social history of Western Australia.

Items in the collection come primarily from individual donors. Their generosity is valued highly, and there is always willingness to consider new donations that meet the Museum’s collection policy. The primary requirement is that the items have an association with

Western Australia but there are also other considerations. Every item needs care and conditions to national standards. If you are thinking of donating an item to our collection, please do not bring it to the Society without consulting the Guide to Offering Items to the Western Australian Historical Society Museum page on this website. This explains how to proceed.

The Museum’s collection is presented through a series of planned exhibitions that tell the story of this State. There are also temporary exhibitions at the Society, externally and online. For more information visit the Exhibitions page. The Museum welcomes visits by individuals and also school and community groups. Group visits need to be pre-arranged by contacting the Society.

The collection can be explored at Research Western Australian History.
